School Board Recognition Month

School Board Appreciation Month

January is School Board Recognition Month and Kopperl Independent School District is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools.

School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child. In a climate of change and challenge, they develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students.  They bear responsibility and oversight in Kopperl ISD for an annual budget of $ 2.5 million; 220 students, in grades Pre-K to 12; and 42 employees.  This important role requires them to spend many hours from their families to attend monthly board meetings and participate in many hours of state required training.

Preparing today’s students to be productive citizens and the leaders of tomorrow is a tremendous task.  As elected officials, school board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren.

We proudly salute these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities.  Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of our community’s children and families. These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future.

The people serving Kopperl ISD are Harold Wellborn, Dean Frailey, Duane Hutson, Bubba McFarland, Jeff Barrett, Lloyd Wayne Kurkendall and Shane Waller.  Under their guidance and support Kopperl ISD has been able to:

  • Hire and retain a high quality staff
  • Achieve a SUPERIOR rating on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST)
  • Score above average on State Comptroller’s  Texas Smart Schools Report comparing district spending to students’ academic progress
  • Met state standards on Student Achievement, Student Progress, Closing Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness on the 2015-2016 Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) with the distinction of being in the top 25% of schools closing performance gaps
  • Consistently win first place in the annual Elem./Junior High District UIL Academic Meet
  • Annually have secondary students advance to state UIL academic competitions
  • Annually adopt balanced budgets without  raising local taxes

Great leadership always begins with a willing heart, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference.  Please join us as we applaud these local leaders for truly caring about our students and community.
